Over the last few seasons there has been a lot of speculation within the koi trade and hobby regarding health issues. We are dealing with a  live product and please remember this. No absolute guarantees can be given as to the health of any fish.

All fish shipped by Echigo Imports are apparently healthy when they leave Japan. They are shipped using the best methods and procedures that we believe are available. However these fish will undergo a long and arduous journey and will need to be conditioned and acclimatised before being offered for sale or introduced to a hobbyist's pond.

All fish carry background levels of parasites, harmful bacteria and other ailments which under the right circumstances could be detrimental to the health of these fish. In our experience most disease is encouraged to proliferate in poor conditions such as bad water quality or over stocking. We will supply you with apparently healthy fish to the best of our ability which are in a deliverable state when they reach you.

KHV has now been confirmed in Japan. No cases have been found within the area we buy all our Nishikigoi from and close controls have been established by the Japanese Government to stop the movement of fish and possible spread of this virus.

The breeders we buy from in Japan have had samples of their fish tested for KHV using the PCR technique and it has not been detected. A certificate showing this can be produced on request. This information is correct when this site was published. This is an ongoing process and fish will be sent on a regular basis to the Inland Water Research Station in Japan for this testing. Samples of our fish will be sent directly from shipments upon arrival in the UK to be tested in the same way by CEFAS.

We will be in Japan at least once a month through the season checking on our breeder’s fish health. This hands-on approach will help us prevent any potential problems.

There are two choices: you buy koi or you don’t buy koi. We hope our record of honesty will convince you to buy koi from us.
